The first sounds of a different language; the first efforts to communicate (in the taxi from airport to hotel); the first beer and tapas and the first bit of sightseeing in the area around our hotel in Alcala de Henares, a small historic city NE of Madrid, made Day 1 in Spain long, exhausting and memorable. It all seems quite unreal to have travelled from Yackandandah to Madrid but we are here, the bikes have been delivered by courier from the company in Portugal and, after we’ve explored Madrid over the next four days, we’ll begin our ride north. The plan is to arrive in Llanes on the coast in three weeks time.
